OWH Sketch # 196

Thank you Laurie at Doodle Pantry for sponsoring today's sketch challenge at Operation Write Home!
In honor of my favorite digital stamp site, I have used the Cocoa Cup Ants digi as the focal point on my card.

ODBD September Challenge: Wheels

Every month, Our Daily Bread Designs generously offers to sponsor up to two full boxes of cards to be sent to our deployed heroes through Operation Write Home. The catch: OWH'ers need to create 50 cards and post them to the OWH Stars and Stamps blog. So here's my card! The sentiment is raised with dimensional adhesive.

TMS #213

There's another great sketch over at Tuesday Morning Sketches. It was followed closely and no sentiment since I wanted the DSP to be the center of attention. If you want some inspiration or just like to see what other card-makers create, check out the great cards (and sketches, of course) at TMS :)

Greens and Blue and More

This card will be entered in the Unscripted Sketches Summer Flashback Challenge #7. It was so much fun to create, mainly because this sketch is awesome!! I used one of my recent purchases (the chair die and stamp set) and added texture to the background. The chair has a paper-pieced pillow, and chair and sentiment are raised with dimensional adhesive.

S & S Midweek Challenge: Cards 4 Kids

Now that our grandchild Hannah Zen is here (born August 7th at a healthy 8 lbs 11 oz), we are no longer on "Baby Watch" and I can sneak in some creative card making between trips to San Bernardino to visit her :-)
I discovered this patterned paper in my 12x12 stash (yes, I still have plenty of these oversized papers) and decided it would be perfect for a Kids Card.

Happy Birthday Hannah Zen!

Our Granddaughter arrived on Wednesday, August 7. Labor was induced beginning the day before so we had plenty of notice and drove up to the hospital in San Bernadino on Tuesday.
Our little sweetie weighed in at a chubby 8 lbs 11 oz, 19.68" long. A presumed infection has kept her in the NICU, but she is the healthiest baby there! I had the honor of being present for Hannah's birth and cutting the cord while hubby (aka Grandpa) waited in the family area throughout the 25 hour ordeal.
Hannah is so beautiful, even with a stork-bite on her forehead :)
It was love at first sight...she will be going home in a couple of days. We are so Blessed.

Christmas in July

This is a great sketch by Unscripted Sketches. I decided to use a 6x6 paper pad purchased in London and gifted to me. It is the craziest paper pad I've ever seen! The theme is Christmas, but the various papers do not coordinate with each other. I want to use these up this Christmas, but am having a hard time. All the patterns in this card are from this pad. As you can see, the reds do not match. Some of the papers are brown (for the holidays?), some are blue, and some are pink. I guess I'll purchase coordinating Bazzill cardstock and go from there...

Not a Halloween Card

It's almost the end of July---too late to be sending Halloween cards to Operation Write Home. However, I couldn't resist purchasing a few orange and black patterned papers especially when these cute pumpkins were smiling up at me...OK, I have cuteness issues. So-o-o-o, the card is an autumn-themed Thank You that follows the sketch very closely. Always fun!

TMS #208

Hey, it's Tuesday, and you know what that means! Another fun Tuesday Morning Sketch. I discovered this adorable pre-colored digital image and couldn't wait to use it. The snowman is warming up in a cup of steaming hot cocoa after a cold winter day. It never really gets cold enough for hot cocoa here in SoCal, but when the temperature drops below 60 degrees, a warm cuppa is definitely in order :)

Because I used the "winter trees" embossing folder that was made for a vertical card, I had to cut the middle section down so everything would go together. Then the printed sentiment was so long, I decided to place it standing on it's side. The center circle is lifted with dimensional adhesive.

OWH Sketch #182

These sketches are so easy to follow! Thanks to the precise measurements of each element. Sketches are always good, but these are always great :)
I found the patterned paper at the recent Scrapbook Expo in a bin of double-sided patterned 12x12 paper for 33 cents each. I bought a few of them to make cards following the "One Sheet Wonder" formula. When I looked more closely at this paper, I realized the front and back were almost the same pattern, only one was smaller. So this paper would not work for the One Sheet Wonder idea. Then when I saw this sketch, I knew this paper would work for a CAS card like this:

S & S Midweek Challenge: Christmas in July

It's that time (already!) to begin making Christmas and Winter-themed cards for Operation Write Home. It is warm and a tad humid in East San Diego, and I've been wearing shorts for weeks. So I will wish for a rainy winter and begin creating cards for our deployed military.
My daughter-in-law brought a paper pad of Christmas patterned paper back from England for me so I can finally use it. These papers don't match each other--kinda strange for a 6x6 pad--but each of the patterns are very nice.
I got a great deal on the rubber stamp I used last spring. It is a "combo" wooden stamp with three stamps on one piece of wood. Another sentiment and the snowflake on the end. Pretty cool. My first card had only three flakes near the sentiment and looked too plain. As you can see, it doesn't look plain there anymore :)

TMS #207

It's Tuesday, and I've spent the last few minutes (closer to an hour!) working on a card for the current Tuesday Morning Sketch with a Twist: Use an Animal Image.
Chloe is my cat. And though she has the coloring of a Siamese in the body of a Domestic Short Hair--and looks nothing like this kitty--I love all cats and really love the collection of cat images including this orange kitty, from Clearly Digi Stamps.
Addendum: Thanks, Tuesday Morning Sketches, for choosing this card as a "Top 5" winner!! Kitty says thanks, too :)

Weird or Wonderful?

Shopping Our Stash has a great challenge this week: Strangest or Weirdest Craft Supply Purchase.
It didn't take me long to decide what to use! To celebrate my retirement last September, I planned a 3-week vacation to visit family back east. While there, I discovered a sweet scrapbook shop in Amish country where there was a whole wall of small pieces of fabric for sale. The idea was to cut out parts of the fabric and stick it onto special cardstock with a sticky-side and use it on greeting cards. I was swept away with the pretty fabric and awesome examples of cards. So, of course, I had to purchase some Christmas fabric and sticky-paper. Upon my return home, the supplies were carefully stored in my craft room and never used. If anyone has seen this technique shared on the Internet, please let me know!
The red strip with holly is the fabric.

Relaxin' in an Easy Chair

Guess what I bought! A stamp-and-die combo I could not pass up. This easy chair is so sweet! And when I saw it I knew that the pillow could be paper-pieced and that is just what I did. Confession time: I have dies and stamps in my collection that have never been used :(
Which makes me wonder why I bought them. So today I used these while they were new and fresh and I know they will be used often.

Whoa. I was full of mojo this weekend and made an incredible 18 cards! That is super for me. They are all for my August box going to Operation Write Home. I know it's only July, but we are on grand-baby watch and I need to stay ahead. Just in case I want to spend some time with Baby Hannah who is due in August :)

Scrapbook Expo San Diego

Here are the items I purchased today! I arrived before 8:30 am and purchased a VIP ticket to get into the exhibition hall one hour before the general public. The goodies advertised for those who got there early consisted of a variety of coupons and vouchers, one Spectrum Noir pen (neon pink), and one small glue stick. It was worth getting up early to beat the crowd.
These 2-sided 12x12 papers will be used for 'One Sheet Wonder' cards. At 33 cents each, they were a bargain. I could not locate a 6x6 paper pad I loved, but did score this 4x6 pad for $2.
I went nuts over the specialty brads and bought the squirrels, farm animals, seashells, and gears sets. I could have bought many more...
JudiKins gave away a small container of 'Diamond Glaze' if you had a coupon downloaded from the Expo website. Very cool.
But the most exciting find for me was a new, cheaper brand of alcohol markers called Spectrum Noir.
I bought 2 sets of 6 markers: Browns and Yellows. The lady in front of me in line purchased lots more---to the tune of $314. The dragonfly card was colored using these markers and now I can finally get into coloring!!! I am starting small, but can already see my stash of these growing and growing like bunny rabbits. All-in-all in was a fun day, I spied a few friends, and arrived home ready for a nap :)

My Oldest Embellishment

Here's my entry for Shopping Our Stash #107: Use Your Oldest Embellishment. At the beginning of the years, I purged my stash and gave away lots of stickers, papers, alphas, and seldom-used items. For some reason, I saved a number of summery stickers purchased years ago when I was scrapbooking all of our summer vacations. I CASE'd this card from one made by Sandy on her weekly OWHtv show at Operation Write Home. It is fun to tear paper and set that half-moon on the horizon :)

Sweet Geometric Shapes

Isn't it nice when 2 or more challenges work together? Yes! Today I decided to figure out a way to use some of the pretty paper from a Mary Engelbreit pad I found in the dollar bin at Michael's. The 12 sheets of patterned paper are pretty and very thin. Each one had to be reinforced with white cardstock. I cut the corners off of one 6x6 sheet for the squares and finally had a chance to use one of the cupcake brads I bought ages ago because they were so darn cute. I punched a couple of images from leftover pink paper for the raised circles at the bottom right to complete the sketch.

CTS #32

Here's another fab sketch web site CAS(E) this Sketch! I'm nuts about sketches as well as other kinds of challenges, and boy, there are a lot of them out there in cyberspace. Some of the challenge sites I have found have so many links to their challenges (like 250!!) that I feel like mine will be lost in the crowd. Plus, I don't feel like wading through all of them. Anyway, there are plenty of cards linked up on this site, generally > 100 per sketch, and the Design Team does an awesome job. Plus, these are 'clean and simple' card challenges; my favorite! So here's my take.
I may make more of these for my Operation Write Home box. Our heroes do miss their loved ones everyday.

My Oldest Stamp

Thanks to Shopping Our Stash for encouraging me to once again use this sweet little bear stamp on a card.
This stamp was a gift from my best friend in nursing school. She gave it to me at least 25 years ago long before I began paper crafting. It didn't get much use back then and I am glad I saved it.
And a loud shout-out to Tuesday Morning Sketches for the layout! I wanted a contrast to the shades of green so I picked this rather garish orange. It looks more subtle here. Hope you like it and thanks so much for stopping by my little blogspot :)

Tuesday Morning Sketches # 201

This sketch is rather 'busy' to me. Still, I had to give it a go. I used clear stamps from a set I found in a UK paper crafting magazine purchased in London by my daughter-in-law. Many of these type of magazines offer freebies (stencils, stamps, patterned paper) with purchase. They are very expensive if purchased in the states, not so much overseas. The flowers are paper-pieced and outlined in black. I also used my new nestability oval dies received in the mail this week. Yay!!
The stark white background was lightly chalked with green. It can be seen better in person.

S & S Midweek Challenge: Transportation

After 2 days of delving into my ancestry, it was a pleasure to create a card for this challenge! We are also in the midst of a bathroom remodel and Princess Chloe (see photo at left) is having a hard time of it with the loud noises and those strange men coming in and out. So we took a creative time-out.
First, I looked through all my digital stamps to find a mode of transportation and came up with this vintage collage. I guess it is a type of carriage (?) Oh! Just remembered I have a camel stamp. That would work, too. Maybe?

One Sheet Wonder

Thank you, Seongsook, for sharing this tutorial with Operation Write Home!! I couldn't wait to try it and here is the result. First, I located one of my all-time favorite double-sided patterned 12x12 papers that I had "saved" in my special place for at least a couple of years. I made a small mistake cutting it out, but was still able to make 8 cards. I found coordinating paper at my LSS, Of the Heart, and put everything together today. What fun!
